It is in Largo de São Tiago, or Santiago , that the Rua Santa Maria leads to, which connects to the castle, making it one of the oldest, if not the oldest, in Guimarães, located within the walls.
However, it was not enough to be the centre of the city, because it also links the city to a legend, which tells the story of the image of the Virgin Santa Maria that was brought to Guimarães by the apostle Saint James, to a pagan temple located in the centre of the city, in a square.
This entire space has been rehabilitated through houses and restorations, but it retains its medieval style, dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. An environment that transports all travelers to the era and offers a break from a tourist visit or a day full of history.
