The Monument to Viana do Castelo, located next to the castle of Santiago da Barra, was inaugurated on October 5, 1999, as part of the celebrations of the centenary of the elevation to city status by D. Maria II (1848/1998).
It was designed by the sculptor Manuel Rocha and consists of a five-metre high bronze statue representing a woman, facing the Viana bar, with a flower in one hand as if offering it to those who enter, while in the other hand she holds a characteristic vessel of the fishermen of Ribeira de Viana do Castelo.
In fact, there are two monuments in Viana with the same theme, symbolizing the maritime spirit of the city: one is this and the other is in the park in front of the marina (on Av. Marginal). They are two different versions of the same statue , one made in the 20th century and the other in the 18th century.
