The small chapel of São Bentinho is a beautiful little shrine to Saint Benedict.
In the eighteenth-century chapel hangs a beautiful painting depicting Saint Benedict, Saint Bernard and Our Lady of Light. Capela de São Bentinho offers an intimate environment to practice your faith.
The history of this chapel is directly linked to the São Marcos Hospital, a major health centre for the inhabitants of Braga and many others from different parts of Minho.
Most of the hospital's patients, or someone close to them, went to this chapel to ask for help or to thank them for returning home.
Saint Benedict, creator of the Order of Benedictines in Monte Casino, in 529, on the Italian peninsula, was also the founder of the Rule of Saint Benedict, one of the original rules of monastic life. In 1964 he was considered by Pope Paul VI (1963-1978) as the patron of Europe.
