Due to its favourable geographical position, Pinhão became an important commercial post for the transport of port wines . First by rabelo, then by train along the Douro and finally by tanker, the place soon developed into a regional centre of the port trade.
From its transformation into a parish in 1933 it immediately became a forerunner by installing public lighting with electricity and the first parish with a telephone, postal service and running water.
For tourists visiting the Douro River, Pinhão is a stop on a boat trip from Porto or on the historic steam train from Régua to Tua.
This place has a famous train station, one of the most beautiful in Portugal.
The traditional wine farms, handicrafts and especially the famous terraced landscape of the Douro vineyards are major assets.
