Sangkhalok refers to earthenware and stone ware made in both Si Satchanalai and Sukhothai during the Sukhothai period. The pottery was glazed in colours such as pale blue and brown with a transparent coating over decorative designs. Sangkalok was exported far and wide to places such as Ayutthaya, the Malay Peninsula, the Philippines, Indonesia and Japan. A group of Sangkhalok kilns was found to the north of the city wall, especially around the ramparts of Wat Phra Phai Luang. There are two types of Sangkalok kilns: a round-up draft kiln with holes at the bottom for ventilating heat vertically and a cross-draft kiln, in a tortoise-shell shape with an outlet for ventilating heat horizontally.
