The Buddha's footprints found at the Sra Morakot ancient monument site in 1988 are the oldest pair in Thailand. Imprinted in a natural laterite layer, these footprints look like those of a human being, with uneven toes. At the centre of each footprint is the Wheel of Dharma. There is a swastika-shaped hole between the pair of footprints, believed to be used to support a post carrying a ceremonial umbrella or a Wheel of Dharma. The latter footprints date back to the 8th century when Buddhism spread to this area. Archaeological evidence and a stone inscription found here suggest that the footprints and the ruins of the hall enshrining the footprints, a laterite front yard, and walls date back to the 9th century.
