New York University is a private research university based in New York City. Founded in 1831 by Albert Gallatin as an institution to "admit based upon merit rather than birthright or social class", NYU's historical campus is in Greenwich Village. As of Fall 2019, the university has a total of 51,848 enrolled students, including 26,733 undergraduate students and 25,115 graduate students.
NYU is the largest private university in the United States by enrollment. The university also has two degree-granting campuses overseas , and has academic centers in Accra, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Florence, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Paris, Prague, Sydney, Tel Aviv, and Washington, D.C. NYU is organized into 10 undergraduate schools, including CAS, Gallatin School, Steinhart School, Stern School of Business, Tandon School of Engineering, and the Tisch School of Arts. NYU's 15 graduate schools include Grossman School of Medicine, NYU School of Law, Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, NYU School of Professional Studies, NYU School of Social Work, Rory Meyers School of Nursing, and Silver School of Social Work. The university also has internal academic centers such as the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Clive Davis Institute, NYU Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, and NYU Institute of Fine Arts.
