The bridge of 1198 was built by the Uri. It was called the "Teufelsbrücke" or "Devil's Bridge". This masterpiece seemed a pact with the devil to most people. The construction of the Teufelsbrücke and Twärrenbrücke in the upper part of the Schöllenen opened the door to the south. The merchants soon discovered that the quickest route to Italy was via the Gotthard pass.
