Why should we study plankton for our climate? Ed Yong tells this in An Immense World. There is a link between plankton and cloud formation. In the oceans, plankton release the molecule DMS when eaten by krill shrimp-like animals, which in turn are eaten by whales, fish and seabirds. DMS does not dissolve easily in water and eventually ends up in the air. When it rises high enough in the atmosphere it creates clouds.
