Description

In the charming Parque de la Constitución you will discover the monuments of the Cuban poet José Martí , son of Leonor Pérez from Tenerife.

The work is by artist Armando Ferandez Rodriguez and was commissioned by the Cuban consulate in the Canary Islands as a tribute to the national hero of Cuban independence.

It was inaugurated on April 30, 1987.

José Martí was a leading Cuban intellectual, poet, journalist and revolutionary leader in the 19th century. Martí started writing at a young age and was involved in the Cuban independence movement at the age of sixteen. His political activities led to him being imprisoned at a young age and eventually exiled to Spain.

Martí studied law and philosophy at the Universidad Central de Madrid and the Universidad de Zaragoza. During his time in Spain he wrote articles and pamphlets calling for Cuban independence.

Throughout his life, Martí lived in exile in several countries , including Mexico, Guatemala, Venezuela and the United States. However, he remained actively involved in the Cuban independence movement , for which he raised funds and sought allies.

Martí's poetry and prose are imbued with patriotism and a deep desire for freedom and justice.

Martí wrote for several newspapers and magazines in Latin America and the United States . He used his journalistic talent to advocate for Cuban independence and to bring the situation in Cuba to the attention of an international audience.

In 1892, Martí founded the Cuban Revolutionary Party and became the leading figure in the struggle for independence from Spain. He played a crucial role in organizing the uprising and bringing together various revolutionary groups.

Martí s was killed in the Battle of Dos Ríos during an armed confrontation with Spanish troops. His death made him a martyr and a national hero in Cuba.
