Ronsde es una ciudad antigua en la frontera del área lingüística de Flandes/Walonia. La región ha estado habitada de forma permanente desde el Neolítico.
El nombre Ronse, mencionado por primera vez como Rotnace (855-873), indica un origen "belga" o celta. Este nombre se deriva del cercano río Ronne con el sufijo celta -acum, que significa aproximadamente "asentamiento en la Ronne". A lo largo de los siglos ha tenido tanto un desarrollo germánico con énfasis en la primera sílaba (Ronse) como un desarrollo romance que ha conservado el énfasis (Renaix).
