Ronsde is an ancient city on the border of the language area of Flanders/Wallonia. The region has been permanently inhabited since the Neolithic period. The name Ronse, first mentioned as Rotnace (855-873), indicates a "Belgian" or Celtic origin. This name is derived from the nearby river Ronne with the Celtic suffix -acum, meaning approximately "settlement at the Ronne." Over the centuries, it has undergone both a Germanic development with emphasis on the first syllable (Ronse) and a Romance development that has preserved the emphasis (Renaix).
