El Minardschouwburg lleva el nombre de su arquitecto Louis Minard, quien construyó este edificio en 1847, como respuesta al entonces teatro y ópera francófonos en Kouter. Él lo construyó con fondos propios.
La fachada es un bonito ejemplo de la arquitectura neoclásica tardía. La fachada enlucida y pintada se acentúa a la altura del primer piso por grandes ventanales de arco con campos de arco decorativamente elaborados.
El Minardschouwburg funcionó como el Teatro Neerlandés hasta 1898. A principios del siglo XX, el interior fue completamente reestructurado con decoraciones muy eclécticas. A finales de los años 80, el edificio estaba totalmente en ruinas, pero fue completamente restaurado antes del cambio de siglo.
Aún hoy sirve como una plataforma de teatro receptivo donde, entre otras cosas, una parte importante de la programación de Vooruit encuentra su hogar. Este fue el teatro donde Romain De Coninck representaba sus obras teatrales populares. Anualmente, el Gent Volkstheater todavía presenta obras de él en este edificio, durante los meses de julio y diciembre. En honor a Romain, hay una estatua "sentada" de él en la plaza frente al teatro.
