En el siglo XIX, el estado belga quería convertir grandes áreas de terrenos de brezo en humedales en las desaventajadas Kempens. Los canales de Kempen, sobre todo el canal Bocholt-Herentals, eran las principales arterias. Las antiguas praderas de inundación estaban poco a poco en decadencia. Ahora tienen un valor cultural e histórico, pero también un valor ecológico, debido a su rica fauna y flora.
