In the 19th century, the Belgian state aimed to convert large areas of heathland in the disadvantaged Kempen into waterlands. Kempen canals, especially the Bocholt-Herentals canal, were the main arteries. The former flow meadows gradually fell into decay. They now have a cultural-historical value, but certainly also an ecological value, due to their rich fauna and flora.
