Los habitantes de Herentals llevan los apodos de "Klokkenververs" y "Peestekers". Sant-Waldetrudis es el patrón de la ciudad. Antiguamente era una ciudad con un próspero comercio de paños. Ahora es un centro urbano pequeño de atención con una industria variada (alimentaria, metálica, textil y del calzado, elaboración de diamantes) y a lo largo de la autopista Boudewijnautosnelweg hay una zona industrial de 268 ha con, entre otros, una gran empresa de electrotenia.
Algunos puntos de interés en Herentals son, entre otros: la iglesia de Sant-Waldetrudis con un interesante retablo de principios del siglo XVI, el Beguinaje fundado en 1266, el Lakenhalle con Belfort de 1590, un monumento a la Guerra de los Campesinos y muchos otros.
