De inwoners van Herentals dragen de spotnamen "Klokkenververs" en "Peestekers". Sint-Waldetrudis is de patroonheilige van de stad. Vroeger was het een stad met een bloeiende lakenhandel. Nu is het een kleinstedelijk verzorgingscentrum met gevarieerde industrie (voedingsmiddelen-, metaal-, textiel- en schoenindustrie, diamantbewerking) en langs de Boudewijnautosnelweg een nijverheidszone van 268 ha met o.a. een groot elektrotechnisch bedrijf.
Enkele bezienswaardigheden in Herentals zijn onder andere: de Sint-Waldetrudiskerk met een interessant altaarstuk uit het begin van de 16e eeuw, het Begijnhof gesticht in 1266, de Lakenhalle met Belfort uit 1590, een Boerenkrijgmonument en vele andere.
