El Vloetemveld se extiende por Snellegem (170 ha) y Zedelgem (110 ha), de las cuales 113 ha son bosque de dominio y el resto dominio militar. Una vez, Vloetem fue un terreno pantanoso y húmedo, propiedad del conde de Flandes. En 1296, Gwijde de Dampierre cedió la propiedad al hospital de San Juan de Brujas. Muchos siglos después, los hermanos del hospital araron el área para convertirla en tierras agrícolas fértiles. Se construyó un dique para contener el agua, de modo que el área detrás pudiera ser cultivada. Ante el dique se formaron numerosos estanques, que fueron desagüados y forestados, principalmente con pino silvestre, entre 1770 y 1882. En 1796, el Vloetemveld fue transferido al OCMW de Brujas. Después de la Primera Guerra Mundial, la mayor parte fue expropiada por el Ministerio de Defensa Nacional para la construcción de un depósito de municiones. En 1980, se adquirió la parte restante por Aguas y Bosques.
