El Fuerte Liefkenshoek fue una fortaleza militar que entre 1585 y 1786 fue un avanzado puesto de la República. En 1894, esta fortificación fue desactivada. Liefkenshoek se convirtió en un hospital (lazareto) del servicio de cuarentena en el Escalda hasta 1952. Después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el fuerte se utilizó como base y depósito de la marina belga. Desde 1964 hasta 1973, sirvió como complejo vacacional del ejército belga para militares profesionales y sus familias. Luego fue cerrado hasta que fue adquirido por el municipio de Beveren en junio de 1980. Desde 1985, es un monumento protegido.
