Mariembourg fue alguna vez una ciudad pero ahora se siente más como un pueblo. Pascal Verbeken lo describe perfectamente en su libro Grand Central Belge: 'El chisporroteante centro de la región de Entre Sambre et Meuse nunca fue eso. Mariembourg no tenía industria, sino dos molinos, cinco cervecerías, un curtidor y seis fábricas de ladrillos. Todo ha desaparecido. De las treinta y seis explotaciones agrícolas que existían en 1930, quedan cinco.'
