En las proximidades de Hoogstraten se encuentran los dos notables fenómenos fronterizos de los enclaves belgas de Baarle-Hertog. Son numerosos pequeños islotes de Bélgica completamente rodeados por los Países Bajos.
Esta curiosidad se originó en 1198, cuando el duque de Brabante cedió una parte del pueblo de Baarle al señor de Breda en feudo. Esta situación se ha mantenido hasta el día de hoy. La parte neerlandesa pertenece al municipio de Baarle-Nassau. Solo en las banderitas al lado de los números de las casas puedes notar si te encuentras en territorio neerlandés o belga.
