Aquí, en el Escalda en Oudenaarde, se vivieron escenas horribles en 1572. En ese tiempo, los reformados no dudaron en desafiar abiertamente al gobierno español. En 1572, los bosgeuzen, bajo el liderazgo de Jacob Blommaert, tomaron la ciudad de Oudenaarde. Con el apoyo de Orange, instalaron un gobierno municipal calvinista. Según la leyenda, ataron a los sacerdotes católicos de manos y pies, y los arrojaron al Escalda. Cuando Alva llegó un mes después, los seguidores de Blommaert huyeron. El líder de los bosgeuzen fue rodeado por los españoles y murió una muerte sin gloria cerca de Eeklo.
