Qui sulla Schelda ad Oudenaarde si svolsero nel 1572 scene terribili. I riformati in quel tempo non esitavano a sfidare apertamente il governo spagnolo. Nel 1572 i bosgeuzen, guidati da Jacob Blommaert, presero la città di Oudenaarde. Con il sostegno di Orange, instaurarono un governo cittadino calvinista. Secondo la leggenda, legarono i sacerdoti cattolici mani e piedi e li gettarono nella Schelda. Quando Alva arrivò un mese dopo, i sostenitori di Blommaert fuggirono. Il capocordone dei bosgeuzen fu circondato dagli spagnoli e morì una morte senza gloria nei pressi di Eeklo.
