Famosos habitantes de los bosques de Gratie fueron la banda de Jan Praet, que durante el día eran vendedores puerta a puerta y por la noche cometían robos en casas donde habían estado durante el día. También asaltaban a transeúntes en el bosque. El nombre del bosque data de este período, ya que los ladrones despojaban a los transeúntes sin gracia. Hasta el siglo XVIII, el bosque de Gratie era un gran y extenso bosque, desde Kouter en Zele hasta el profundo Overmere.
