Si el museo quiere compartir historia con su público, entonces compartir conocimiento es la misión del centro de conocimiento. El centro de conocimiento es la memoria del museo: las colecciones se estudian, se hacen accesibles y se ponen a disposición del público.
Pero además de ser receptor, el público también es proveedor de conocimiento. Junto con el público, el centro de conocimiento quiere perseguir, reunir, limpiar, refinar, actualizar o redescubrir la ciencia. La investigación histórica propia se entrelaza con historias familiares y trabajos locales, y se enriquece con encuentros fortuitos.
