Originalmente se planeó una autopista a través de esta área. Sin embargo, en 1977, el municipio de Jette decidió crear un parque en el valle de Molenbeek. Este parque debería conectar el bosque de Laarbeek, los pantanos de Jette y Ganshoren, el bosque de Poel, el bosque de Dieleghem y el jardín del Sagrado Corazón. Con la finalización de la tercera fase en 1989, este objetivo se realizó efectivamente. Al conectar todos los espacios verdes, se quería crear un contrapunto norte al bosque de Terkameren y la foresta de Soignes en el sur, así como los parques en el valle de Woluwe en el este de Bruselas. Con motivo del 150 aniversario de la monarquía en 1980, el parque fue nombrado en honor al rey Balduino.
