Los estanques de arcilla de Viconia en Stuivekenskerke son especialmente conocidos por su gran riqueza aviar. Los 7 estanques muy diferentes y la nueva parte excavada, los húmedos y elevados prados de heno, los setos y el pequeño bosque pantanoso ofrecen una gran variedad de biotopos en una superficie relativamente pequeña. Además, la reserva natural está situada favorablemente a lo largo del río Ijzer y entre áreas ricas en agua, como la desembocadura del Ijzer, el valle de Handzame y las marismas de Ijzer. Hasta la fecha, se han observado nada menos que 195 especies de aves en la reserva natural, incluyendo muchas aves acuáticas y limícolas, carriceros y bigotudos.
