Assenede es conocido como el pueblo de mejillones - en el centro se encuentran algunos apreciados restaurantes de mejillones. El distintivo del municipio, aunque cada vez menos visible, es el adoquinado. El adoquinado también otorga a los habitantes del pueblo su apodo "mordedores de adoquines".
En el territorio de Assenede se encuentran algunas rías de la zona de rías de Meetjesland, entre ellas el Canal Rojo y el Canal Grande. En la plaza del mercado hay algunas viviendas auténticas.
