En Okegem, cerca de Ninove, nació el pensamiento del movimiento daensista. No es una coincidencia, ya que aquí existía desde la década de 1880 una corriente organizada de comerciantes e intelectuales cristianos flamencos y antisocialistas. Los miembros se llamaban a sí mismos los Roelanders, en honor a su revista semanal Klokke Roeland. Boon describe cómo Pieter Daens y los Roelanders se encontraron por primera vez en abril de 1893 en un 'kelderkamerke' de una pequeña posada cerca de la estación de Okegem. Durante esta reunión se fundó el Partido del Pueblo Cristiano. El hermano de Pieter, el sacerdote Adolf Daens, se convirtió más tarde en el símbolo del movimiento.
