Spalbeek es la parroquia más occidental de Hasselt y está situada en la N2, la carretera que conecta Hasselt y Diest. Al norte de Spalbeek fluye el Demer mientras que el límite sur está formado por el Herk.
Spalbeek, que se encuentra en la zona de transición entre los Kempen y Haspengouw húmedo, era en el pasado una aldea agrícola pero se ha desarrollado desde la década de 1970 hasta convertirse en un pueblo residencial.
