Spalbeek er den mest vestlige delkommune af Hasselt og ligger ved N2, forbindelsesvejen mellem Hasselt og Diest. I nord for Spalbeek flyder Demer, mens sydgrænsen dannes af Herk.
Spalbeek, der ligger i overgangsområdet mellem Kempen og fugtige Haspengouw, var tidligere en landbrugsby, men har siden 1970'erne udviklet sig til en boligby.
