Landen se encuentra en la parte de Haspengouw de Brabante Flamenco. El pueblo debe su nombre a su suelo fértil: en 1050 fue anotado como Landane, lo que significa 'campos cultivados'. Hoy en día, todavía hay campos en las laderas alrededor de Landen.
