Landen est situé dans la partie flamande du Brabant en Hesbaye. La ville doit son nom à son sol fertile : en 1050, elle est répertoriée sous le nom de Landane, ce qui signifie autant que « champs cultivés ». Aujourd’hui encore, on trouve des champs sur les pentes autour de Landen.
