El molino de Tuyl se encuentra a unos 700 metros al oeste de la antigua abadía de cistercienses de Herkenrode en Kuringen-Hasselt, en el Tuilterdemer, que más al oeste se une de nuevo al Demer. Al sur se encuentra la autopista Amberes-Liège y al oeste una parte suprimida del Stokrooieweg.
El molino de Tuilt ya se mencionaba como molino de ban en un documento de 1083. Los habitantes de Tuilt estaban obligados a moler su grano en este molino, que en 1213 fue donado por el conde Luis II de Loon a la abadía de Herkenrode. Probablemente, el molino y el territorio circundante habían sido utilizados anteriormente por un tal Tegnon, vasallo del conde.
