Según la leyenda, Mietje Stroel era una niña expósita que había caído de un barco en las aguas interiores cerca de Zelzate. Fue encontrada por un contrabandista y criada en el Bosque de los Contrabandistas. Era conocida como "la chica del bosque de contrabandistas que orinaba donde le daba la gana". "Stroelen" significa "fluir susurrante".
