La Diócesis de Lieja es la más antigua de las ocho diócesis belgas. Celebró su ochocientos aniversario en 1991. Hasta 1795 fue una diócesis germánica, después del concordato con Napoleón fue durante un tiempo francesa; solo tras la Revolución Belga de 1830 se estableció la provincia eclesiástica belga. El actual obispo de la Diócesis de Lieja es Jean-Pierre Delville. Es el 92º obispo. La catedral de la diócesis es la Catedral de San Pablo. Hasta 1794, esa era la Catedral de San Lamberto, que fue destruida ese año.
