Las fuentes del río se encuentran en el pequeño pueblo de Birven, en la parte más oriental del municipio valón de Aubel, frente al cementerio militar estadounidense Henri-Chapelle. El río fluye luego a lo largo de Clermont, Mortroux, Bolbeek, Dalhem y Berneau hacia el Mosa en Moelingen. Los afluentes incluyen el Bel y el Bolland. El Bolland es un río tributario por la izquierda y desemboca en el Berwijn en Dalhem. El Bel desemboca en el Berwijn cerca de la Abadía de Val-Dieu. La abadía se encuentra en la orilla derecha del Berwijn.
