La iglesia fue fundada alrededor del 980 por el obispo Notger, quien decidió ser enterrado allí. Fue reconstruida entre 1750 y 1765 según el plan octogonal original. Alberga tres obras maestras del arte medieval. La Sedes Sapientiae (Sede de la Sabiduría) es una escultura policromada de la Virgen con el Niño, exquisitamente tallada en roble en 1230. Esta imagen, con ropas maravillosamente drapeadas, se puede ver en la tercera capilla a la izquierda. La Virgen y San Juan en el Calvario en la capilla a la izquierda del coro datan de 1250. Son dos figuras excepcionales que representan con realismo y gran maestría la contenida tristeza de los testigos de la crucifixión. La iglesia posee también un mobiliario barroco de alta calidad.
