La chiesa fu fondata intorno al 980 dal vescovo Notger, che vi fece seppellire. Fu ricostruita tra il 1750 e il 1765 secondo il piano ottagonale originale. Ospita tre capolavori dell'arte medievale. La Sedes Saptientiae (Sede della Sapienza) è una scultura policroma della Vergine con Bambino, finemente scolpita in quercia nel 1230. Questa statua con abiti splendidamente drappeggiati si trova nella terza cappella a sinistra. La Vergine e San Giovanni sulla Calvario nella cappella a sinistra del coro risalgono al 1250. Sono due statue eccezionali che, con realismo e grande maestria, rappresentano il dolore contenuto dei testimoni della crocifissione. Inoltre, la chiesa possiede arredi barocchi di alta qualità.
