El fundador de la celda fue Jacobus van den Brouck, originario de Hasselt, quien en 1685 comenzó a dar clases a niños pobres en Riksingen. Alrededor de 1690 se estableció como ermitaño en el límite del municipio, de modo que también se pudieran educar niños de Werm, Vrijhern y Sint-Huibrechts-Hern. Sin embargo, en 1703 la celda fue destruida cuando las tropas francesas ocuparon Tongeren, en el marco de la Guerra de Sucesión Española.
