Le fondateur de l’ermitage était Jacobus van den Brouck de Hasselt, qui a commencé à enseigner aux enfants pauvres à Riksingen en 1685. Vers 1690, il s’installe comme ermite à la périphérie de la commune, afin que les enfants de Werm, Vrijhern et Sint-Huibrechts-Hern puissent également être instruits. En 1703, cependant, l’ermitage a été détruit lorsque les troupes françaises, dans le cadre de la guerre de Succession d’Espagne, ont pris Tongres.
