El nombre de la calle "Befferstraat" puede parecer un nombre de calle peculiar para los de mente impura. Pero el origen del nombre es menos lascivo de lo que se podría imaginar. Para el origen y significado del nombre de la calle se han propuesto varias hipótesis, a saber, "calle detrás del Belfort" o un nombre derivado de "Befferen": una propiedad de la familia de Beffere en el siglo XIII, o de Philip Snoy, señor de Befferen en la primera mitad del siglo XVII. El nombre también podría referirse al Befferhof sobre Pasbrug, como antigua sede del tribunal del País de Mechelen.
