The street name "Befferstraat" may seem like a remarkable street name to the lewd-minded. However, the origin of the name is less lewd than one might suspect. Several hypotheses have been proposed for the origin and meaning of the street name, namely "street behind the Belfry" or a name derived from "Befferen": an estate of the Van Beffere family in the 13th century, or from Philip Snoy, lord of Befferen in the first half of the 17th century. The name may also refer to the Befferhof above Pasbrug, as the former seat of the court of the Land of Mechelen.
