Los robles que se encuentran aquí fueron encontrados durante la extracción de grava. Quizás estos árboles crecieron hace unos 2000 años más río arriba. Formaban parte de un bosque primigenio a lo largo de las orillas del Mosa. Las partes más altas de las orillas se inundaban con menos frecuencia, lo que permitía el desarrollo de bosques de galería de madera dura con imponentes robles. Debido a la fuerza del agua, el río cambió su cauce en varias ocasiones, devorando así partes del bosque. Los árboles fueron arrastrados por la corriente y terminaron en las orillas, donde fueron cubiertos por grava, arena y arcilla. Así se conservaron todos esos años.
