Entre los romanos, era costumbre enterrar a sus muertos fuera de las murallas de la ciudad. La mayoría de los ciudadanos eran enterrados en un cementerio común, pero para los ciudadanos prominentes se erguían túmulos. De estos túmulos, también llamados tumuli, se han erigido decenas a lo largo de la Via Belgica, de los cuales tres se encuentran en el actual territorio de Tongeren; el túmulo de Herstappelt y los tumuli de Koninksem en la Paardsweidestraat y la Kassei romana.
