It was customary for the Romans to bury their dead outside the city walls. Most of the citizens were buried in a communal cemetery, but burial mounds were erected for prominent citizens. Dozens of these burial mounds, also called tumuli, have been erected along the Via Belgica, three of which are located on the current territory of Tongeren; the Herstappel tomb and the tumuli of Koninksem on the Paardsweidestraat and the Roman Cobblestone.
