Esta es la región del Dender, naturalmente llamada así por el río principal, el Dender. La región coincide en gran parte con la cuenca del Dender. Las ciudades más importantes de la región del Dender son Aalst, Geraardsbergen y Dendermonde. La región va desde Geraardsbergen en el sur hasta Dendermonde en el norte. El Dender fluye a través de las provincias de Henao y Flandes Oriental a lo largo de una longitud de 65 km. Un afluente nace en el municipio de Sirault y el otro un poco al noreste del municipio de Antoing. En Aat, el Gran Dender y el Pequeño Dender se unen. Allí el río se vuelve navegable. El Dender desemboca en el Escalda en Dendermonde.
