This is the Dender region, naturally named after the main river, the Dender. The region largely coincides with the Dender basin. The main cities in the Dender region are Aalst, Geraardsbergen, and Dendermonde. The region stretches from Geraardsbergen in the south to Dendermonde in the north. The Dender flows through the provinces of Hainaut and East Flanders over a distance of 65 km. A branch originates near the municipality of Sirault and another just northeast of the municipality of Antoing. At Aat, the Great and Little Dender merge. There, the river becomes navigable. The Dender flows into the Scheldt at Dendermonde.
