Entre 1993 y 2006, Machelen-aan-de-Leie fue la residencia del autor y poeta neerlandés Gerard Reve.
Él está enterrado allí en el nuevo cementerio en la Hoevestraat.
En la plaza Georges-Jozef Imschoot se incorporó el poema Credo de Reve en un muro conmemorativo.
