El actual aeropuerto, todavía un dominio militar, se construyó en el periodo de 1936/37 como un aeropuerto de emergencia para la escuela de vuelo militar de Wevelgem.
Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial fue ocupado por la Luftwaffe y utilizado de 1941 a 1943 por el famoso Jagdgeschwader 26 bajo el mando del Oberstleutnant Josef ‘Pips’ Priller.
El temido caza aliado Focke Wulf 190 fue utilizado por primera vez de forma operativa desde aquí en agosto de 1941.
El 28 de octubre de 1944, un bombardero británico Lancaster de cuatro motores del Nr. 635 Pathfinders Squadron realizó un aterrizaje de emergencia en Moorsele. Después de reparaciones, el bombardero pudo despegar nuevamente el 31 de octubre y regresó a salvo a su base en el Reino Unido. De 1946 a 1954, la base fue utilizada nuevamente por la Fuerza Aérea Belga como parte de la escuela de vuelo militar de Wevelgem.
